Lighting the way for civics & History Education

The Kentucky Educational Development Corporation (KEDC), in partnership with the organizations below presents American Civics and History Instruction & Engagement through Valuing Educators or ACHIEVE.

PROJECT FOCUS AND GOALS

ACHIEVE will support the valuable work of:

Increasing Kentucky teacher’s knowledge in American History and Civics content with exposure to in-depth professional learning presented by quality experts in the fields of History, Civics and Education providing student-centered content, resources, teaching strategies, and networking and training to assist program teachers become leaders in their own communities via PLC and mentoring through:

  1. Presidential Academy Sessions offered through a flexible menu of professional learning options available In-Person and via Live Streaming and Recording throughout the academic year.
  2. Annual Summer Conference: Elevation Summit, a five-day learning event featuring nationally renowned presenters, experts, and academic historians. Participants will also experience engaging off-site opportunities designed to enhance the goals of ACHIEVE.
  3. Experiential Immersion Presidential Academy in which participants will experience on-site historical field academies to provide substantive historical content increasing teacher’s knowledge. These Academies will allow participants to experience the times and deeds of the yearly topic by visiting the area and provide a lasting impact on their ability to articulate this encounter to the students.
  4. Increasing student achievement and interest in American History and Civics content through providing:
    • a. Student Congressional Academies offered as yearly week-long learning opportunity for high school students together with lawmakers, academics, journalists, and business leaders to discuss the importance of applying the art of history and civics into their everyday life.
    • b. Improvement of administrator effectiveness, knowledge and instructional insight for observing American History and Civics lessons through inclusion and collaboration in ACHIEVE.

ACHIEVE’s yearly themes are:

  • Year 1) 1619-1783: Creating and Defining a Nation
  • Year 2) 1784-1877: Preservation and Redefining a Nation
  • Year 3) 1878-1917: Industrialization and Civic Evolution
  • Year 4) 1918-1953: World War and Growth of Executive Power
  • Year 5) 1954- Current: Civil Rights and Growth of Judiciary Power
