Kentucky Studies Update
Spotlight on “Kentucky’s Role in the Civil War”
In Kentucky Studies at Jackson County High School, students are diving into our current unit, “Kentucky’s Role in the Civil War.” As a border state, Kentucky sent soldiers to both the Union and the Confederacy, and students are exploring what that meant for families, communities, and our state’s identity. They are analyzing primary sources from Kentucky soldiers and civilians, mapping key battles and transportation routes, and discussing how slavery, divided loyalties, and wartime decisions shaped life here at home.
To showcase their learning, students have created Canva one-pagers, hallway “mini-museum” exhibits, and written reflections answering the question, “Which side would I have chosen if I lived in Kentucky in 1861—and why?” These projects highlight strong reading, writing, and critical thinking skills, as students support their opinions with historical evidence. We are beginning to share photos of this work with families and colleagues so our community can see the amazing things happening in Kentucky Studies. Through this unit, students are not just memorizing dates and battles; they are building a deeper understanding of Kentucky’s past and what it means to be informed, engaged citizens today.
